ENCINO, CA (July 20, 2011) … The Entertainment Merchants Association Scholarship Foundation announced today that four outstanding college and college-bound students have been designated as the recipients of its 2011 scholarships. 

“This year’s recipients are superb students,” said Bo Andersen, President & CEO of the Entertainment Merchants Association (EMA). “EMA takes great pride in acknowledging outstanding students and in being able to assist our members and their families to obtain college educations.” 

The recipients were selected by the EMA’s Scholarship Committee, which is comprised of representatives from five member companies. Established in 1987, EMA’s Scholarship Program has awarded more than $1 million in scholarships to more than 230 students. 

“The EMA Scholarship Foundation is maintained through the generosity and support of member companies,” noted Andersen. “We want to express our sincerest gratitude to all contributing companies, without whom this program would not be possible.”

This year’s recipients are:

Samantha DeMatteo, Giant Eagle, New Castle, PA

Alexandra Mientus, Giant Eagle, Sarver, PA

Nathan Rubin, Giant Eagle, Pittsburgh, PA

Chelsea Riley, Hastings Entertainment, Windsor, MO

Students will receive $1,500 per year for up to four years if they are entering as a freshman. 

EMA’s scholarship program is open each year to high-school seniors who will be entering college as freshmen in the following year as well as to undergraduates currently attending a four-year college institution. Eligibility for scholarship awards is now open to those pursuing a graduate degree. 

Employees, children, and spouses of EMA regular and associate member companies worldwide are eligible for EMA Scholarships. Employee applicants for next year must complete at least six months of full or part-time employment by March 1, 2012. A child or spouse of an employee is also eligible if the employee has completed at least six months of full-time employment by March 1, 2012. Scholarships are limited to colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.

The Entertainment Merchants Association (EMA) is the not-for-profit international trade association dedicated to advancing the interests of the $35 billion home entertainment industry. EMA-member companies operate approximately 35,000 retail outlets in the U.S. and 45,000 around the world that sell and/or rent DVDs, computer and console video games, and digitally distributed versions of these products. Membership comprises the full spectrum of retailers (from single-store specialists to multi-line mass merchants, and both brick and mortar and online stores), distributors, the home video divisions of major and independent motion picture studios, video game publishers, and other related businesses that constitute and support the home entertainment industry. EMA was established in April 2006 through the merger of the Video Software Dealers Association (VSDA) and the Interactive Entertainment Merchants Association (IEMA).
