"2 Days in New York," "Americano," "Downton Abbey," and "Wild Horse Wild Ride" Win Video Awards

Receive EMA’s 2013 Independent Home Entertainment Awards 

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (June 19, 2013) … The Entertainment Merchants Association today presented Independent Home Entertainment Awards to four video titles for being the best in their respective categories. The awards were given out during EMA’s 2013 Independent Product Market at the Marriott Marina del Rey in Marina del Rey, California.

Winner of the Rental Title of the Year was 2 Days in New York from Magnolia Pictures. 2 Days in New York features Chris Rock as hip talk-radio host and journalist Mingus and Julie Delpy as his French photographer girlfriend, Marion. They live cozily in a New York apartment with their cat and two young children from previous relationships. But when Marion’s jolly father, her oversexed sister, and her sister’s outrageous boyfriend unceremoniously descend upon them for an overseas visit, it initiates two unforgettable days of family mayhem.

Americano from MPI Home Video was recognized as the best Direct-to-Video/Limited Release Title of the Year. In Americano, Martin (Mathieu Demy) leaves his girlfriend (Chiara Mastroianni) and home in Paris after receiving news of his mother’s death and sets off for Los Angeles to tie up the loose ends of his rocky maternal relationship. Arriving in the United States, Martin discovers a hidden side to his mother’s life. As Martin digs deeper into his mother's past, he discovers she had a hidden relationship with a beautiful woman named Lola (Salma Hayek), who he finds at a seedy strip club in Tijuana called the Americano.

For the second year in a row, a Downton Abbey title received the award for Sell-through Title of the Year. This year, Masterpiece Classic: Downton Abbey – Complete Seasons 1, 2 & 3 from PBS Distribution was the winner. The three seasons go from the sinking of the Titanic to the end of the Great War, as the secure and ordered world of the beloved estate is rocked and the lives of the inhabitants of Downton are shaped by intrigue, crisis, and romance.

Screen Media Film’s Wild Horse Wild Ride was named Documentary/Special Interest Title of the Year. Wild Horse Wild Ride looks at the Extreme Mustang Makeover Challenge, in which 100 people across the country attempt to tame a wild mustang in 100 days. Following this dangerous and harrowing feat performed by everyday people from every walk of life is a public showcase that determines whether these horses can be saved from a life in captivity.

“There are some truly wonderful videos that come out of independent studios and provide great entertainment to the consumer,” noted EMA President and CEO Mark Fisher. “It is a pleasure to recognize these outstanding titles and give them the attention they deserve.”

EMA’s Home Entertainment Awards winners were determined by a vote of EMA retail and distributor members. In developing the list of nominees, the committee took into consideration the rental and sell-through success of the title and the strength of the marketing campaign launched by the studio or distributing label of the video, both to consumers and retailers.

EMA’s Independent Product Market (IPM) is the premiere invitation-only hosted buyer event offering two-days of pre-scheduled meetings and networking opportunities for leading independent studios and the industry’s largest buyers.
