Launch Of Two New Programs Added Value For All Attendees: Tech Tour And Knowledge Exchange

$600,000 Donated To Cystic Fibrosis

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (July 30, 2013)... The second annual Los Angeles Entertainment Summit, benefitting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, was held at the Hyatt Regency Century City July 22-24. The event, co-chaired by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment’s Mark Horak and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment’s Simon Swart and produced with the assistance of the Entertainment Merchants Association (EMA), created a forum in which entertainment content producers and retailers gathered to discuss developing consumer habits and trends in the home entertainment industry.  

The invitation-only summit offered content producers, including film studios and game publishers, and retailers and distributors of the content, the opportunity to engage in idea-sharing and networking through meetings and social events. This year’s event hosted more than 1,000 attendees. 

“Bringing together the key decision makers in the video games and home entertainment categories makes perfect sense given the pace of change in our business,” said Mark Horak.  “The addition of the Tech Tour and Knowledge Exchange provided insights and added value to all Summit participants and anyone driving the future of our business today.”

LAES introduced two new programs to the schedule for 2013. The Tech Tour showcased 22 companies with emerging technologies that are transforming content discovery, engagement and consumption. Companies included: Antix Game Service;; Cisco; Flixster; Intel; Kaleidescape; Kumbuya; M-Go; Microsoft; Nokia; nVidia; OUYA; Pebble; Reelhouse; Rovi; Skit!; Sony Entertainment Network; Tongal; Trailerpop; and Verizon Digital Media Services.

The Knowledge Exchange offered attendees the opportunity to hear state of the industry keynote presentations. In addition, retail supply chain management executives joined roundtable discussions with studio counterparts to discuss trends and issues and share best practices. 

The three-day event included numerous industry receptions and networking opportunities and various fundraising activities including a Casino Night on the Twentieth Century Fox studio lot.  Proceeds from the fundraising activities benefitted the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and will support the development of new drugs and treatments to extend the lives of those affected by the disease, which impacts more than 33,000 people in the United States and Canada alone.

LAES has proven to be a very cost-effective and efficient way to meet with our key retail partners to discuss the initiatives we must address if we are to be successful in the future,” said Simon Swart.

Content producers participating in for this year’s event included all major film studios, including Anchor Bay, DreamWorks, Gaiam Vivendi, HBO, Lionsgate, Paramount, Sony Pictures, Twentieth Century Fox, Universal Studios, Walt Disney Studios, and Warner Bros.

Video game publishers Activision, Bethesda, Microsoft, Sony Computer Entertainment, Square Enix, Take Two Interactive, Ubisoft, Walt Disney Interactive, and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment were also in attendance. 

Attending retailers included Amazon, Apple, Best Buy, GameFly, GameStop, Google, Hastings, Netflix, Redbox, Target, Toys “R” Us, Trans World Entertainment, and Walmart. 

Also participating were home entertainment and video game distributors Alliance Entertainment Corp., CoKeM, Ingram, and Rentrak. 

Mark Fisher, President & CEO of the Entertainment Merchants Association added, “LAES has once again provided tremendous value to our retail and distributor members, and we were proud to play a role in bringing our industry together for an event that is making such a significant contribution to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.”

The Los Angeles Entertainment Summit planning committee included many volunteers from across the industry, including individuals from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Entertainment Merchants Association, Twentieth Century Fox and Warner Bros.

Based on the positive feedback and on-going commitments from key participants plans are underway for the 2014 Los Angeles Entertainment Summit. An exact date will be announced soon.
