PC Game Box Labeling and Packaging Standards

The disclosure logos/platform identification marks shown below were developed and published in January 2002 by the EMA (Entertainment Merchants Association), which owns all rights thereto. The EMA recommends using these logos on all computer software packaging and in conjunction with related marketing materials. Standardized disclosure of the software format is beneficial to consumers and to the industry. EMA grants permission to all manufacturers to use these disclosure logos on and in connection with their video games on the following terms:

  1. Manufacturer must first sign and return a copy of EMA's license agreement. Download agreement here.
  2. The computer/video game must be compatible with the applicable software platform for the logo listed below.
  3. Misleading or improper use of a logo for a game not compatible with the applicable software platform is not authorized.
  4. Three archive production copies of the game/product and its packaging should be sent to EMA for its records within fifteen (15) days after the date of shipping and/or distribution of the Product.
  5. Use of a logo should be accompanied by a statement - appropriately placed on packaging with legal notices - to the following effect: "Software platform logo (TM and ©) EMA 2006."
  6. Placement:
    • Clamshell and Standard EMA-sized Box Packaging Guidelines:  Always on the box front in the upper right corner of the product, within the black and gray platform identification bar. See attached specifications for logo and text placement within the bar.
    • Template Design Guidelines: See attached template guidelines for placement of identification bar on the front and spine for both clamshells and standard EMA-sized boxes. Since dielines may vary by printer, use these instructions as guides for logo and text placement within the bar (i.e., PC logo should be .125" from right edge of box, centered vertically within the black and gray bar).

Note: This template applies only to clamshell and standard EMA-sized boxes. For non-standard-sized packaging, use the platform logo as appropriate; however, it is not required to use the gray platform identification bar.
  7. Size:
    • Template Design Guidelines: These dimensions are based on the dielines we used in development of the template: The bar is .75" high on both the clamshell and the standard EMA-sized box; it is 5.0785" wide on the clamshell, and 5.25" wide on the box. The spine width is 1.063" on the clamshell and 1.25" on the box.
    • Icon and Identification Bar Colors: The 4 color black is made up of 50C, 50M, 50Y, 100K. (See template style guide for color references - Orange: C-0, M-70, Y-100, K-0; Gray: C-0, M-0, Y-0, K-90; Black: C-50, M-50, Y-50, K-100.)
  8. Enforcement Policy: For details regarding sanctions and other enforcement against misuse of any EMA logos, click here.
