Market Overview
- Consumer spending on home video is nearly three times greater than that of theatrical box office.
- Consumer spending on home video in 2005 exceeded $24 billion.
- Sell-through accounted for over $16.4 billion.
- Rental generated $8.5 billion
Hardware
- 82 million U.S. households own a set-top DVD player.
- 89 million U.S. households can play a DVD if portable DVD-players, DVD-compatible computers and videogame systems are included.
Software
- 26% of DVD titles released in 2005 were in the Special Interest genre
- Consumers spent $192 million on the top five TV DVD titles in 2005.
Video Games
- Console video game software sales totaled $5.77 billion
- Video game rentals totaled $663 million.
- 25% of gamers were over the age of 50
- 42% of Americans plan to purchase one or more games in 2006.
Video Retailers
- Mass merchants had a 42% market share of sell-through consumer spending on home video.
- Video Super Stores account for 59% of consumer dollars spent on video rental transactions.
- Independently owned video stores account for 29% market share of consumer dollars spent on rental transactions.
Piracy
- Studios lost an estimated $3.8 billion worldwide to physical piracy and $2.3 billion worldwide to Internet piracy in 2005.
- It is estimated that the video game industry lost more than $3 billion to piracy in 2005, not including losses attributed to the Internet.
Emerging Technology
- The high-definition DVD format remained unresolved.
- 20.7 million U.S. households are VOD capable.
- Digital video recorders were in 12.1 million U.S. households.
